I was born and raised in the humanities; in the 1990s I married technology while I was writing my dissertation on the US construction of Native Hawaiians in the nineteenth century. Frustrated with the limitations of traditional library research, I turned to Ebay for locating first edition books and obscure publications. Since that time, of course, most research in my field has gone digital, which means I could now do a similar project in half the time. Looking back, I realize that all the time and dimes I spent in the library left too little time to actually THINK about my work. That lesson is foremost in my approach to teaching undergraduate research.
