With all the very aggressive discounting going on in colleges for etextbooks, still less than 3% of all textbook sales are digital format. College students clearly still prefer printed media for education and ebook sales are basically stagnant and show no signs of taking off.

My colleague and I are exploring humanities data visualization this summer together with some students. As technology folks, we’d like to build some reusable software tools for visualizing text and other humanities-relevant data. I’d like to hear both what people have been doing, and also what people would like to be able to do.

I’d like to link it to the need for students to learn about big data and think about how to teach them visualization tools, as well.

What if eTextbooks combine with LMS on tablets? In flipped classrooms? How do we create and deliver learning content in a digital age? So, I guess that’s a vote for this session.

Hope there’s enough interest to make it a session topic!

Comment on Strategies for broad-based adoption by jacque wernimont http://lac2012.thatcamp.org/05/23/strategies-for-broad-based-adoption/#comment-514 Fri, 01 Jun 2012 14:00:52 +0000 http://lac2012.thatcamp.org/?p=236#comment-514 This is a really hard nut to crack, especially at LACs where institutional culture and infrastructure might not change very quickly. I’d be interested in thinking about ways that showcasing DH work might lead to organic adoption. I’d also like to parse out the differences between “digital pedagogy” and “digital humanities” – they are related but not not identical and the differences might be important for this conversation.

There are other kinds of workshops – like the Women Writers Project seminars www.wwp.brown.edu/outreach/seminars/ – but the idea of a roadshow in intriguing. It would certainly help out folks at LACs. Perhaps a road show that lands at regional hubs?

As someone without any institutional affiliation, if scholarship isn’t Open Access I’m not likely to read it. (If an article is important enough I can ask friends for bootleg copies, although this feels a lot like running moonshine.)

Lately I’ve been wondering about how open access can change the conversation, and whether democratizing discussion is always a good idea.

Two relevant pieces came out of the “Shape of Things to Come” conference on online humanities scholarship: Jerome McGann, Sustainability: The Elephant in the Room and Greg Crane, Give us editors! Re-inventing the edition and re-thinking the humanities.

That’s probably true for any tool; for example, faculty are more sophisticated book users, as well. Peter Bradley (who I see on the list of campers) talked a little about this at the NITLE Symposium in connection with a student iPad pilot: The Promise and Perils of an iPad Learning Community.

I think the thrust was more having those LACs who were more advanced share their experiences.

Glad there’s anther DHSI-like thing at MITH, of course, but seems to me like people might love for something to come to them.

That means you can park in any lot on campus. Just avoid the reserved spaces and handicapped spots and you’ll be fine.

Are there specific places that we can – and cannot – park on campus? And, for those staying in the dorms, do we need to park at a specific area or ???

Thanks and looking forward to this weekend!
